What I do at Capital B

I’m the editor at Capital B Gary. I help shape our newsroom vision and ensure our news coverage aligns with Capital B’s mission, all while serving and representing the people of Gary.

Why I came to Capital B Gary

No matter where my journalism career took me or which newspaper I found myself at, my commitment remained the same: to tell stories of those who were overlooked or exploited, which, unfortunately, often included Black communities. In these stories, I recognized aspects of my own past — my friends, my family, and my city. Capital B’s mission struck a chord with me; it didn’t just cover Black communities, but also empowered Black journalists. But above all, it was the people of Gary and the city itself that drew me back. I was lured by the prospect of returning home, making an impact, and giving back to a city that molded me into the man I am today.

Where I’m from

Haha, you already know — I’m G.I., born and bred. I grew up on the West Side. I then ventured downstate to Bloomington for my college years. Post-graduation, I landed a job at the Post-Tribune, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Subsequently, I took an education reporter job in Toledo, Ohio, before getting hired at the Chicago Tribune. After the Tribune, I joined USA Today while continuing to live in Chicago.

What makes me happy

I love writing. I actually write a lot of fiction in my “free time.” Apart from spending time with my wife, my happiest moments involve sinking into a chair to write, accompanied by the warm glow of a candle, the soothing sounds of soft jazz in the background, and a glass of wine within arm’s reach.

The song I’m listening to on repeat right now

I’m feeling Diddy’s new album, and Arin Ray also stays in my rotation. Autumn has arrived, and as the leaves change colors, I find myself listening to mostly R&B.

My favorite Black storytellers/creators

I draw immense inspiration from all artists — writers, poets, musicians, rappers, and singers alike. The often overlooked poetry, rhythm, and cadence present in hip-hop and R&B is “literary beauty” to me. I find equal inspiration in crafting beautiful prose from both Colson Whitehead, one of my favorite authors, and Nick Grant, a rapper I hold in high regard.
