What I do at Capital B
I cover all things to do with health, environment, and everything in between! It’s a broad spectrum of topics, but that just means I get to engage with community members on a wide range of issues that can impact their everyday needs and overall quality of life. That can mean anything from a pricey water bill or local food options to overall mental health or environmental inequities.
Why I came to Capital B Gary
Capital B’s commitment to community-focused reporting attracted me to the organization, presenting a unique opportunity to be one of the newsroom’s first reporters. Gary is an underreported community that does not get the representation it deserves. I am excited to help unearth a different side of Gary, meet its people, and dispel prevailing stereotypes.
Where I’m from
I am a proud member of the DMV, but not the Department of Motor Vehicles! Hailing from Virginia, I am part of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia trio known as the DMV. But to keep it simple, I just say I’m from neighboring D.C., home of go-go music and mumbo sauce!
The song I’m listening to on repeat right now
I’ve been listening to a lot of ’90s R&B lately. “At Your Best (You Are Love)” by Aaliyah and “Put Your Records On” by Corinne Bailey Rae stand out as my two feel-good go-tos.
My favorite Black storytellers/creators
I love Black storytellers and creators. Ida B. Wells is the OG, and always deserves her flowers. I am also a fan of Jemele Hill and Nikole Hannah-Jones’ investigative work. Additionally, I would like to give an honorable mention to Lynae Vanee, creator of “Parking Lot Pimpin,” who provides insightful commentary on social and cultural issues in the Black community.
