Hundreds of Gary residents will lace up their shoes this weekend for a life-saving cause that affects nearly 1 in 8 women in the United States.

On Saturday, Sept. 27, at 9 a.m., Community HealthNet Health Centers will host its annual 5K Breast Cancer Walk at Marquette Beach Park. The event invites families, friends, and coworkers to support the fight against breast cancer and raise awareness throughout the community.

“I think that it is important to continue to educate women and men regarding breast cancer,” said Dr. Janet Seabrook, Community HealthNet founder and Gary health commissioner. “During the pandemic, many people fell behind on their annual screenings. I hope that this year’s event will give people the information they need to discuss their risks and need for screening with their health care provider.”

The year’s theme, “Boots on the Ground: Every Step Matters,” encourages residents to take action in prevention and support. Participants will have the chance to engage with local health resources and learn more about vital breast cancer screenings.

Community HealthNet, one of a handful of health centers serving Gary’s community, is a nonprofit organization with locations throughout Lake County, providing affordable medical and behavioral health services to local residents “regardless of their ability to pay.”

A recent study from Indiana University’s School of Medicine suggests that income level plays a significant role in breast cancer rates in Northwest Indiana, with lower-income residents experiencing higher rates of the disease due to limited access to care.

The American Cancer Society also reports that while Black women have lower overall breast cancer incidence rates, they are more likely to die from the disease compared to white women. Because Gary is a majority-Black city with many residents on fixed incomes, relying on Medicaid, or living below the federal poverty level, having access to affordable health care can make a world of difference.

Proceeds from the fundraising event will support CHN’s comprehensive health programs, which focus on improving access to care, promoting early detection of breast cancer, and addressing health care disparities within the community, the organization said.
