The Brown Family Ranch in Gary came alive on a toasty September weekend as riders and families packed the gallery. Barrel racing, relay races, and flag racing carried the action well into the night.

Away from the arena, quieter moments unfolded around the competition: a horse being groomed, cattle grazing before the events, and another horse peering from a trailer, while a boy perched on a fence rail watched the action during the rodeo.

This year marked the 10th-annual rodeo at the Brown Family Ranch, an event that has become both a competition and a community gathering for Gary and the surrounding region.

The next generation was on display, from 8-year-old cowboy Mason Colbert sitting on the fence to riders like Karrington Allen, who captured first place in the junior barrel race.

Timed events like barrel racing tested speed and precision, with riders pushing their horses to the limit.

Above, LeAndrea Ashley’s portrait spoke to the character of the rodeo. Below, the quiet image of a young cowboy resting on his horse, contrasted with the action in the arena, revealed both its spirit and its risks.

The gallery of images captured the final races and moments of competition before the night gave way to its close.
