In the wake of multiple temporary store closures following a wave of citywide health inspections, the City of Gary and the Gary Police Department confirmed today that the Gary Health Department received a threatening phone call directed toward its inspectors.

“This type of behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” said Gary Police Chief Derrick Cannon. “Our officers are actively investigating this matter and will use every resource necessary to ensure the safety of our city employees and hold those accountable who attempt to intimidate or threaten them.”

As the city ramps up inspections to improve safety and accountability, Mayor Eddie Melton pledged that the threats will only strengthen his administration’s resolve.

“The city has increased inspections to raise the standard for local establishments, while helping businesses create healthier and safer spaces for our community,” Melton said

“For a long time, many establishments were allowed to operate without proper oversight. The fact that this threat was made only confirms that the work we are doing is right, necessary, and impactful. We will not be distracted or intimidated. On the contrary, this fuels our determination to stay the course on behalf of the people of Gary. We remain steadfast in our mission to build a Greater Gary for all residents.”

Recent inspection records show several Gary businesses have been temporarily shut down after multiple health code violations.

Jerk 2 Go Express was cited for unsafe food storage and sanitation issues, including mice in the prep area. Vee and E Original Jamaican had food stored at unsafe temperatures, and raw food near cleaning chemicals. Miller K Market was cited for expired food and mold, but passed reinspection the next day. Save More locations on Broadway and Virginia Street faced plumbing and sanitation violations, with the Virginia Street store still closed after failing an August inspection.

The City of Gary urges anyone with information related to this incident to contact the Gary Police Department at (219) 881-7300 or text (219) 207-8477 to leave an anonymous tip.
