Here’s a look at some important public meetings scheduled in Gary in January 2024
Common Council
Gary’s government will see many changes in 2024. The first Gary Common Council meeting, marking Eddie Melton’s debut as mayor, is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at City Hall on the second floor. This meeting follows a reshuffling of key leadership roles. Melton recently appointed Derrick Cannon Sr., a 24-year Gary Police Department veteran, as chief of police, and Larry Tillman II, an 18-year Gary Fire Department veteran, as fire chief. Melton has outlined his plan for his first 100 days in office. Let’s see how he and the council work together to serve the people of Gary.
Gary public schools
The Gary Community School Corporation, managed by MGT Management under the state’s takeover, will hold its first meeting of the year on Jan. 9, followed by a School Board learning session on Jan. 23. It is worth monitoring the dynamic between the emergency manager and the appointed School Board. How much influence do these local leaders hold in the decision-making process of Gary’s public school district?
Additionally, the district is currently finalizing next year’s school budget. Meanwhile, Gary residents are still waiting to hear the final verdict on the district’s recent proposal to close the last two public middle schools.
Parks, Recreation, and Aquatics
The city of Gary’s Parks, Recreation, and Aquatics Superintendent will hold its next regular meetings at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, and Jan. 23, in the Park Board Room located inside the Hudson-Campbell Sports And Fitness Center at 455 Massachusetts St.
