Following the 2024 primary election, Capital B Gary has analyzed voter turnout data across all Gary voting precincts, comparing the latest results with those from the 2020 primary. Our analysis focused on registered voters, actual voters on election day, and voter turnout percentages in eight specific neighborhoods.

We condensed the number of neighborhoods analyzed because overlapping voting precincts and recent redistricting resulted in several neighborhoods losing precincts while others gained new ones. This approach enabled us to deliver a detailed and accurate neighborhood-level breakdown of voting in Gary for the 2024 Primary election, capturing all Gary voters.

Gary Neighborhoods

Miller was Gary’s most active voting district, with a 20% voter turnout in this year’s primary. Although it has the second-highest registered voters after Glen Park, Miller saw the highest turnout of any Gary neighborhood on primary election day.

The Tolleston neighborhood had the third-most voters show up to the polls on primary election day. In 2020, Tolleston posted Gary’s highest voter turnout at 31%. However, in this year’s primary, the neighborhood ranked second, trailing only Miller.

With 8,175 registered voters, Glen Park has the most registered voters of any Gary neighborhood, yet only 905 residents voted in this year’s primary election. It also recorded the third-lowest voter turnout percentage among the eight qualifying neighborhoods.

The Pulaski neighborhood ranked third among Gary neighborhoods in voter turnout percentage, with nearly 14% of its 3,212 registered voters casting ballots.

In this year’s primary election, Midtown had the third-fewest actual voters, with only 368 of its 2,868 registered voters casting ballots.

Brunswick experienced a 12 percentage point drop in voter turnout from the 2020 to the 2024 primary elections, marking the steepest decline among Gary neighborhoods. The neighborhood also had the second-lowest number of voters cast ballots in this year’s primary election.

With 4,737 registered voters, Ambridge-Mann had the third-highest number among Gary neighborhoods in the 2024 primary election.

Downtown precincts reported the lowest voter turnout in Gary for both the 2020 and 2024 primaries, with 10.62% and 18.21%, respectively. The area also had the fewest registered and actual voters.
