What I do at Capital B

My job falls under the fun umbrella subject of business and economic development, giving me the flexibility to cover a wide range of topics within those areas. From the local economic landscape to the city’s revitalization efforts and a look at the decades of financial hardship that have plagued the city, each topic requires me to engage with the community to understand what the future business scene could look like in Gary.

Why I came to Capital B Gary

I have operated under a “FUBU” mentality when it comes to Capital B: creating positive Black news for Black people by Black people. Gary reminds me a lot of Cleveland, as both cities lack in-depth news coverage that highlights the positive developments within the local community. In my new role, I hope to break stereotypes about Gary and shine a new light on the city.

Where I’m from

I am a born and bred native of Cleveland, Ohio, just under 400 miles east of Gary. Home to corned beef sandwiches and the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, Ohio’s second-largest city offers a mixture of things for everyone.

The song I’m listening to on repeat right now

I’ve been listening to a few songs, including “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar, “Moments in Love” by The Art of Noise, “Rocket” by Doechii, and whatever else pops up in my random playlist.

Some of my favorite Black Creators/Storytellers

I have been lacking in my continuous appreciation for keeping up with Black creators and storytellers, but I love Nikole Hannah-Jones, Philip Lewis, Keith Lee (because I am a foodie), and others that I follow on social platforms. Of course, I always have to highlight Ida B. Wells for the work that she’s done in the journalism world.

What do I do in my spare time

In my free time, I usually like singing karaoke, seeing live music, trying new food, traveling or exploring an arts scene.
