The Federal Emergency Management Agency is in Gary, offering a one-stop shop for Northwest Indiana residents affected by the Aug. 11 storm.
The recovery center is at McBride Hall in United Steelworkers Local 1014, 1301 Texas St., Gary. State and federal officials will be available from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday, Oct. 2. There is no cost, and appointments are not necessary.
State services include:
- Housing support, including temporary/long-term housing assistance
- Information on understanding insurance policies
- Public health Information, such as vaccination and vital records, tetanus shots, and cleanup guidance
- Guidance on lost wages due to disaster
- Motor vehicle registration and license assistance, including help with replacing lost documents and credentials
- Crisis counseling and mental health service referrals
- State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) support
- General concerns, such as small-business recovery assistance, help with getting basic needs such as clothing, food, and cleanup assistance, and guidance for agricultural loss and potential fraudulent contractor concerns
Federal assistance includes:
- FEMA support with Individual Assistance applications
- U.S. Small Business Administration disaster loan information for businesses and individuals
The deadline to apply for FEMA assistance is Oct. 25. Residents can apply online at disasterassistance.gov, call the helpline at (800) 621-3362, or visit FEMA in person.
