A busy month lies ahead for Gary officials as demolition begins at Broadway Manor, budget season gets underway and several major projects continue to move through the city’s boards and city council.
The Gary Housing Authority confirmed this week that demolition is moving forward on the Broadway Manor public housing complex, on the 1200 block of Broadway. The townhouse units, no longer eligible for federal repair funding due to their condition, will be cleared to make way for what the city is calling a “revitalized footprint” of commercial and retail space. Residents have already been relocated, though the city has not said where, and officials haven’t responded to questions about whether the lost public housing units will be replaced.
“This moment isn’t about clearing away the old,” said Taryl Bonds, Gary Housing Authority executive director. “It’s about creating space for new, cutting-edge construction that reflects the future we’re building together.”
The redevelopment is expected to come before the Redevelopment Commission, the Common Council — or both — this month. Officials could provide additional details on financing, developer interest, and a construction timeline at that time.
August also marks the start of Gary’s 2027 budget season. As departments submit spending requests and council members begin budget discussions, residents will get an early look at how the city plans to fund redevelopment, housing, and other priorities in the year ahead.
