As the second half of Indiana’s legislative session picks up steam, the Gary Common Council is weighing the creation of a new legislative committee to track bills moving through the Statehouse that could soon become law and impact the city. The political landscape has shifted locally, too. Council member Marian Ivey has stepped into the 4th District seat vacated by former council President Tai Adkins, now the Calumet Township trustee. A Democratic caucus will be held this month to fill Ivey’s vacant at-large seat.
Meanwhile, the fate of the closed Beckman School is in limbo after residents spoke out against a proposed redevelopment at the site, prompting the city’s zoning board to reject the plan. That decision now heads to the council.
